Dutch From Zero is a free course for absolute beginners (A0) working towards their first basic conversations (A1). I'm Denis — a software developer and an expat in the Netherlands — and I write these lessons as I learn the language myself.
That perspective is the whole point of the site. I explain the things that genuinely confused me as a beginner — de versus het, why the verb keeps jumping to second place, when to add an -e to an adjective — in plain English, with a Dutch example and audio for every rule.
One idea per lesson, checked before it ships
Each lesson covers a single grammar point and follows the same rhythm: a short explanation, Dutch examples kept to A0–A1 vocabulary, and quick practice. Every grammar rule is cross-checked against established Dutch references and common usage before it goes live, and the audio is generated with professional Dutch (nl-NL) text-to-speech so pronunciation and spelling are learned together.
Honest about what this is — and quick to fix mistakes
The lessons are written and hand-edited by a learner, not reviewed by certified teachers, so I keep the claims modest and the explanations careful. If you spot an error or an unclear explanation, email me and I'll review and fix it. Corrections are treated as a priority, and the course carries a visible "last updated" date so you know it's maintained.
The course I wished I'd had on day one
When I arrived in the Netherlands, most free resources were either scattered word lists or full academic grammars. I wanted something in between: short, structured, and honest about which parts are actually hard. So I built it — 17 lessons and interactive practice, free, with no account and no sign-up.
A developer building in the open
